FAQs

How do I apply for my provisional licence?

You can apply for your provisional licence as early as the age of 15 years 9 months however you cannot legally drive on UK roads until the age of 17 (You can drive a car when you are 16 if you get, or have applied for, the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment). licence can be applied for on the DVSA site - click here.

Can you help me with my theory test?

Certainly. Through Total Drive, I can grant you access to the Theory Training section (subject to availability see terms and conditions). This will enable you to work through modules, take mock tests and practice hazard perception. The software does give me access to your progression and if any questions have proven difficult I can review these with you and give you more guidance. This is a free of charge service for ongoing customers only.

How long are driving lessons?

I strongly advise all my students to commit to a 2-hour lesson per week, the minimum I would offer is 1.5 hours. The exception to this is for existing students who are test ready and waiting for their test, in these situations a 1-hour lesson can be provided. The core reason for this is that with a 1-hour session vs 2-hour sessions per week, I have found that the rate of progress is more than double in a 2-hour session. 2 hours allow you time to learn the basics of a skill and then practice that skill with plenty of time. In contrast, with 1 hour lessons by the time the basic skill has been taught the practice time is limited.

What are mock tests and do you provide these?

A mock test is a test that the driving instructor carries out. I use the same markings that the DVSA currently use and set out a mock test route incorporating what you may encounter on a test. Whilst the main goal is to pass the mock test the more important function is that it can highlight areas which may require more work. I always aim to do multiple mock tests in the lead-up to the practical so you can be confident going into the test.

I have an international driving licence and would like to get my UK driving licence, how do I do this?

If you hold an international driving licence (i.e. not issued in the UK), it will be valid for 12 months from when you enter the UK. After this period, you will need to apply for a UK provisional licence, and you will be required to take and pass the UK theory test and the UK practical driving test.
