Talking to the parents is essential - they may be able to contribute a great deal to the solution, either through the extra help they can offer with a tutor's guidance, or in the way they deal with the problem. The best of us can be frustrated by lack of progress when we know just how bright our kids are, and unwittingly apply pressure.
