FAQs

How long will it take to learn to drive?

According to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), it takes on average 42 hours of lessons to learn to drive, with an addition of 21 hours of private practice with a friend or relative. Some drivers will need fewer lessons and some drivers will need more. What's important however, is that you develop into a safe driver.

Should I practice with friends or family?

Practicing with friends or family is a good idea and as your instructor I will help you to understand how you can do this safely, legally and to best advantage.

Can I get a friend or relative to teach me to drive and take me to test?

An Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) has been specially trained to the standards set by the Driver and Vehicle Safety Authority. They will know all the latest and up to date standards and how to keep you safe during your training. An ADI will use a dual control vehicle to ensure your safety and that of other road users. Your ADI will know when you are ready to drive on your own and will recommend the right time to book a test.

What happens if I incur Penalty Points on my provisional license?

An Approved Driving Instructor will make sure you don't inadvertently break the rule of the road and incur fines or penalty points while training. If you have points on your provisional licence, they'll be carried over to your full licence when you pass your test. If you get any further penalty points that take you up to a total of 6 or more within 2 years of passing your driving test, your licence will be revoked and you'll be back to square one.

Can I change instructors during the course?

If for any reason you would like to change your driving instructor during training, you should do so. A list of local driving instructors in your area is freely available. It is important that you are able to work well with your chosen instructor. Remember - you are the client and the choice is absolutely yours at all times.
