It was originally built on the orders of William 1 to dominate the Viking city of Jorvik which is now known as York. York's iconic historical monument is steeped in a thousand years of history. The raised mound that it stands on was once the site of a timber keep that had been built by William the Conqueror. This was burnt down in 1190. Clifford’s Tower was once part of York Castle, the tower played a role in turbulent national events such as the Dissolution of the Monasteries and the English Civil War.
