How the UCAS points calculator works

We look up every grade you pick in UCAS's own table for 2027 entry, the one for courses that start in September 2027. In that table each qualification has a size, each grade has a band, and UCAS multiplies the two. We don't redo that sum. We copied UCAS's published points for 14 qualifications by hand, so the number beside each grade is UCAS's, not ours.

Then we add up your rows, which is the easy part. An offer is often more than a number: "112 points, including B in Biology, no grade below C" is three tests, and your grades have to pass all three. So each part gets its own line and its own answer: Met, Not met or Not checked.

Take a student predicted B, B and C in Biology, Psychology and Maths, with a B at AS in Maths from Year 12 and an A in the EPQ. We leave the AS out, because the A level in the same subject counts instead. Add it anyway and you'd be looking at 152, but UCAS says universities and colleges generally only count the highest level you've achieved, and its own example is this exact pair: an AS and an A level in the same subject. Counted properly, that's 136, comfortably past the 112 in the offer. Now drop each A level one grade for a bad day and the total lands on 112. The points still hold, but the C in Biology misses the B and the D in Maths breaks "no grade below C". The total says yes. Two parts of the offer say no.

We won't turn any of this into a chance of getting in. We also never say you've met your offer, only that each part is met on the grades you entered, because even UCAS calls its own calculator "an indicative guide": each university or college decides which qualifications it accepts and how many points it counts.

Who this is for

Year 13 students, and S5 or S6 students in Scotland, with predicted grades and an offer, or a shortlist written in points. Parents who want to check the sum before the firm and insurance choice, some of whom sat their own A levels before there was an A*. Tutors and teachers working through a student's options. And anyone on results day whose grades came in different from the predictions, holding the phone with one hand.

Student and parent questions about UCAS points

How many UCAS points is an A level?

For 2027 entry an A* is worth 56 points, an A 48, a B 40, a C 32, a D 24 and an E 16. Each step down costs 8 points, so three Bs make 120 and BBC makes 112. Pick "A level" in any row and you'll see the same figures beside each grade.

What is 112 UCAS points in A level grades?

Six sets of three A levels make exactly 112: A*BE, A*CD, AAE, ABD, ACC and BBC. On the BTEC side it's DMM in the Extended Diploma or D*D* in the Diploma. One trap: DMM to MMM costs 16 points, twice a single A level step, so MMM drops you to 96. And if your offer names a grade in a subject, which 112 you get matters as much as the number.

Does an EPQ count towards UCAS points?

Yes, it carries points: 28 for an A*, then 24, 20, 16, 12 and 8 down to an E. Whether those points count towards your offer is your university's call, not UCAS's. If yours counts them, leave the EPQ ticked. If it doesn't, untick "Count it towards my offer" and we'll show your total without it. If you don't know yet, leave it ticked and add the points in your offer, and we'll put the question on your list to ask.

Do AS levels count towards UCAS points?

A standalone AS does: 20 for an A, 16 for a B, then 12, 10 and 6 for an E, which puts it at about 40% of the A level at each grade. An AS in the same subject as your A level usually won't count, though. UCAS says providers may not count "an AS level if you have an A level in the same subject". Type the subject the same way on both rows and we'll count it once.

Do universities use UCAS points or grades?

Both, so it pays to know which one your offer uses. In UCAS's own words, many universities and colleges "base offers on your qualifications and grades", while some "may only accept Tariff points from the highest scoring three A levels or Scottish Highers". If your offer reads BBB, enter it with "Add grades, like ABB" rather than as 120 points. A*CC also makes 120 and still misses BBB.

How many UCAS points is a distinction?

It depends on the size of your BTEC National. A D is 24 in the Certificate, 48 in the Extended Certificate, 72 in the Foundation Diploma, 96 (DD) in the Diploma and 144 (DDD) in the Extended Diploma. A D* adds 4 points in the Certificate, 8 in the Extended Certificate and 12 in the Foundation Diploma. Check which size you're on before you add anything up; your timetable or your teacher will tell you.

How do IB grades convert to UCAS points?

Course by course, not from your Diploma score. For 2027 entry a 7 at Higher Level is worth 56 points and a 5 is worth 40. At Standard Level a 7 is 28 and a 5 is 20. The Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge carry 12 for an A down to 4 for an E. Watch the year on any table you find: Higher and Standard Level grades 5 and below are worth more than in the 2026-entry table, where a Higher Level 5 was 32.

How many UCAS points are Highers and Advanced Highers?

A Higher is worth 33 for an A, 27 for a B, 21 for a C and 15 for a D, and an Advanced Higher 56, 48, 40 and 32. Hold both in the same subject and we count the Advanced Higher and leave the Higher out, because UCAS's guidance is that universities generally only count the highest level you've achieved. If your university counts both, there's a switch for that. The gap can be big: four Highers and two Advanced Highers can read 148 counted once, where a plain sum says 214.

Do GCSEs count for UCAS points?

No. UCAS is plain about it: Tariff points apply to Level 3 qualifications, "not Level 2 qualifications such as GCSEs". If your offer asks for a GCSE grade, add it under "Anything else in your offer". It stays on your summary as a part we can't check, with a question to put to the university.

UCAS points for A levels, BTECs, IB and Highers

These are UCAS's published points for 2027 entry, the same figures our calculator uses. Find your qualification, read across to your grade and add up. Or fill in your rows above and we'll do the sum for you, counting a subject you hold at two levels just once.

Here's each total three A levels can make from 96 to 144, with the grades behind it and any BTEC grades worth exactly the same. Equal points don't make equal offers, though: if yours names grades, check those too.
