Now we're heading in to the season of drizzle and frosts, it might be time to check your workout wear is weather-proofed so you're ready to get out whatever the weather! The most effective way to stay warm and dry in autumn and winter is to layer up. Layering is really important to help you regulate your body temperature, keep moisture away from your skin and stay warm and dry even when you begin to sweat. Base layer- wicks moisture away from your skin so you stay warm and dry. Mid layer- insulates you and helps you stay warm. Outer layer- Blocks wind, resists water and allows moisture to escape through breathable fabric. I'm a firm believer that you don't have to spend a fortune on workout gear but do bear in mind that its best to avoid cotton- it traps moisture so it stays wet. A good, reasonable alternative is polyester. Fleece is a great mid layer. And a good outer layer features Gore-tex. Charity shops often have some good low-cost options for outwear and mid layers. If you've worked out with me outside in the cold months you'll know that I'm a fan of a hat- keeping your extremities covered is a great way to stay warm or quickly cool down. My top tip is choosing a wind-blocking fabric for your hat and gloves.
