Citymoves event for Scottish Dance Beyond 1805nDance Workshop at the Anatomy Rooms!nnFrancis Peacock taught dance in Aberdeen from 1747-c.1805. He wrote a book about dance and dancing in 1805 in which he gave a detailed description of 10 reel/strathspey steps he had observed Highlanders performing, and which he also taught.nnIn this workshop Patricia will explain and teach her interpretations of some of these steps which can then be used to create solo or group dances. This workshop is open to all and suitable for any age. The class level will be adjusted accordingly to participants’ skills.nnScottish Dance Beyond 1805: Reaction and Regulation presents a history of Scottish music and dance over the last 200 years and focuses on sources originating in Aberdeenshire. The book tells the story of what changed and why. It unfolds through a series of colourful characters, through the dances they taught and the music they danced to, and through the story of one dance in particular: the Highland Fling. It considers how changes in Scottish dance reflected the changes in Scottish society and culture.nIn this event, Dr Ballantyne will introduce the book and demonstrate some of the dance steps that are discussed in it. There will be plenty of time for questions.nnPatricia H Ballantyne is an Honorary Research Fellow with the University of Aberdeen's Elphinstone Institute. She gained a PhD in Ethnology in 2016, on which the book is based. She has taught Scottish (percussive) step dance, Highland dancing, ceilidh dancing and has lectured on Scottish dance for many years, at home and abroad.
