Happy New Year Greetings to you All!nnI hope your festive celebrations have passed peacefully and that you are looking forward to or hoping for a much improved, 2024!nnJust as a reminder that our classes resume next Monday, I’m currently nursing myself back to health from a nasty cold/flu bug, which if I’m honest, is not surprising, as I have definitely been spreading myself thinly these last few months! Initially, I felt cross, this was ‘such a waste of my time, as I had so much to get through before classes start again’ but then I realised that it has offered me some very precious time for end of year reflection and letting go of things that do not serve me. It came to me, whilst meditating at dawn on New Year’s Day, wrapped in warm blankets, sitting outside in my garden, (on what has turned out to be a rare moment without rain!) making the effort to just ‘be’ in the moment, as the world, simultaneously was going to bed and beginning to wake, there was a magical energy of stillness and beauty, with the strong energies of letting go and the excitement that this particular new year might bring. My thoughts ALWAYS turn to how and why I teach Yoga and something that keeps coming up for me, is the need for clear communication - what exactly do I teach? How do I explain why my yoga is different? Why should people be interested in it? How can it help them? Then I went inside and opened my emails to find one from my amazing American teacher who I stay in close contact with, am on a programme of continuous learning and who is a world leader in her approach to nervous system yoga, backed by science. It was as if she was reading my thoughts! So I asked her permission to copy and paste her words as I said to her ‘I quite simply cannot write it better’! nn“ There's a lot of preconception out there about what yoga is and what it's for. Often paired with Pilates or fitness classes, for most people in the west, yoga falls into the categories of exercise and/or healthy living - which gets reflected back to us in the way yoga is used in marketing. Yoga promotes itself as an aspirational fitness tool and is also used to sell anything that fits into that box, or wants to, including McDonalds, Apple computers, Carl's Jr., Hyatt hotels, yogurt, water filters, and even Pillsbury Dunkable French toast sticks. 😆nnBy some estimates, yoga has more than 300 million practitioners globally, 10% of the US population says they practice, and it brings in $88M a year (just to be clear, the majority of that goes to Lululemon (yoga fashion clothing) and its competitors – NOT teachers).nnWith all the yoga...
