Feeling super proud of myself right now after just finishing a 3 day water fast! í ½í²¦nnIt was challenging and amazing at the same time, and I feel great!! í ½í²ªí ½í²nnI havenât disciplined myself to this extent for a couple of years at least, following the previous 3 and half day water fast. Before then - bodyfitness competition days í ½í¸² nnAm feeling super empowered to know I still have that mental focus to what it takes, with a reminder it just comes down to a simple decision to say yes and do it! nnSo other than strengthening my discipline muscles, (is that a thing?í ¾í´·í ¼í¿¼ââï¸)nnWhy would I do such a thing, surely itâs unhealthy, kills metabolism, burns off muscle and potentially leads to an eating disorder?nnMy answer (and not just my answer you can research for yourselfí ½í¸)nnNo, no, no and no í ½í¸nnHereâs the sciency bit..nnMost people are aware of intermittent fasting 12-16hrs and teaching your body to start burning fat as fuel.nní ½í²«17 hours is when it gets exciting as the body goes into autophagy, which maximises at 72hrs. This is when the body starts healing itself and getting rid of toxins from the cells and clearing out the ones that are beyond repair.nní ½í²«24hrs the gut starts to repair, as we know so much begins from an unhealthy gut.nní ½í²«36hrs deep fat burning stores such as the liver that we donât access during exercise or standard dieting. nní ½í²«48hrs dopamine resets, improving our mental health and levels of anxiety. Is meditation suitable for me?

Most people benefit from meditation and find that it brings greater clarity and positive emotion to their lives. In the Buddhist context, meditation is seen as a key transformative practice. For some mental health conditions, however, meditation is not always helpful and can even, in some cases, make you feel worse. If you are suffering from a mental health issue, even if you do not have a diagnosis or are in any way concerned that meditation may not be suitable for you, please do contact us before you book or attend a class and we will be happy to discuss this with you.

Why haven't I heard of some of the relaxation pathways you offer?

Although all of the relaxation exercises and training we offer are used widely around the world, some of them have not been very popular in the UK. In many European countries, both autogenic training and progressive muscle relaxation training are popular and widely available, and often paid for by health care providers. Just as Mindfulness-based stress reduction courses over the last decades in the UK, and more recently Yoga Nidra have become more widely known.

What happens on a retreat?

Retreats are residential, with simple but comfortable sleeping accomodation. Most rooms are shared but you can request a single room if you have a particular need. Retreatants help with the cooking and washing up (a good opportunity to get to know one another!) The timetable is usually pretty relaxed, with a mixture of sessions of meditation, discussion, talks, ritual, and free time. The exact timetable and activities will depend on the retreat. But you don't need worry about having to sit for hours on end!

Do I need to wear any special clothing for Tai Chi?

Just wear loose comfortable clothes that allow you freedom of movement. We either practise in bare feet or in flat shoes with no heel and non-marking soles.
