This week was MENTAL AWARENESS WEEK and it made me reflect on the benefits of exercise in general and specifically group exercise classes. Research has shown that exercise improves your mood by releasing endorphins and serotonin — the “feel good” neurotransmitter in the brain — which help create feelings of happiness and reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress. This week however, I recognised how much more group classes offer – a friendly chat with somebody you meet every week, a reconnection with somebody you haven’t seen for years, or a place were you can just appreciate how your body moves.
